Review, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 10 #03 (New Rules, Part 3)

21 05 2014

Actor Nicholas Brendon joins the creative team as his character Xander acquires help from his old friend—um, master—Dracula.
The new vampires are still a mystery, and unquestionably similar to Drac . . .
Meanwhile, Buffy and Willow track down one of those new vampires as a study specimen!

* The team from Angel & Faith takes over Buffy!

* Executive produced by Joss Whedon!

Writer: Christos Gage, Nicholas Brendon
Artist: Rebekah Isaacs
Colorist: Dan Jackson
Cover Artist: Steve Morris

After saving the world from Slayer-turned-supervampire Simone, and restoring magic and the life of her magically created sister Dawn, Buffy is in the best place she’s ever been. There is a little weirdness going on, with the Slayer handbook’s pages suddenly being blank… But she’s back together with Willow, Xander and Spike, doing what she was meant to do as the chosen one: slay vampires.

Ever since Season 10 has started, in both of its titles, I’ve realised that it is actual harder to write a positive review than write a negative one. It feels like repeating yourself over and over again, when on the other hand it is so easy to find faults and talk about them and judge the people behind for them.

So I guess that I will just have to repeat myself and say that I just loved this issue. I believe that it has been the best so far, ever since the beginning of S8. It was well written, funny, smart, and I am certainly not good in finding the right adjectives in english in order to describe something. I don’t know where Brendon’s pencil stops and where Gage’s starts and I don’t care, the transition feels normal like it’s actual only one writer in the issue.

And again I will repeat myself about the art, perfect fitting in the mood of this issue. DarkHorse has really nailed it this season with the artists they’ve chosen.

I don’t want to spoil things so I will not talk about the story, but as a Spike girl that I am, way for having Spike kick Dracula’s, well you know what, at least up until….Oh, and Spike doesn’t need an invitation, since obviously he’s already staying in Xander’s/Dawn’s place, but didn’t they just have an one bedroom apartment last season? Anyway, not important, I don’t care, the issue was terrific! Recommended, go get it, I just love this season!

I’m looking forward to reading this one – especially now with you giving it such high marks. I did not know what to expect from the remarks from NB – I glad to see that this is not going to be silly man jokes.

I am enjoying the title, the character interactions/voicing but think the storyline is a bit too predictable and laid out so far. Pacing is slow so perhaps it will pick up and get going more soon.

Plus the solicitations for #4 had too much exact info and gave away where this issue was going too clearly.

It is great seeing Spike so integrated though, warms the cockles of me heart it does. Plus yeah to bed hair!! 😀
